sligo woodland school
School tours

For educators and group leaders who want children to experience something deeper than a typical school tour, our woodland sessions offer an immersive, hands-on outdoor classroom where curiosity leads the way. Designed for preschool and primary groups, each 2.5-hour visit blends nature crafts, skill-building, storytelling and fire-circle connection in a safe, thoughtfully guided environment. Children leave more confident, more connected, and full of wonder, with muddy boots, glowing cheeks, and memories that last long after the bus ride home.

School & Group Visits to the Woods
We love welcoming school groups to the woods. There is something truly special about watching children arrive into a wide, open landscape — seeing the joy, confidence and curiosity that emerges as the boundaries gently widen and they roam as far as the eye can see (and sometimes even further).
Sligo Woodland School ran as a preschool setting for five years, and that experience continues to shape everything we offer. When you bring your class or group here, you’ll feel the magic of a real outdoor classroom — one where nature leads the learning and children are free to explore, imagine and discover.
Visiting the Woods
We welcome:
- Preschool groups
- Primary school classes
- School tours
- Private groups
You can visit at any time of year — each season brings its own gifts, and we work creatively with whatever the woods are offering.
A typical morning session lasts 2.5 hours, scheduled at a time that suits your school service and transport (usually between 9:30am and 12:30pm).
What to Expect
Our sessions are immersive, hands-on and rooted in nature. Activities may include:
- Nature-based crafts
- Woodland songs and games
- Scavenger hunts
- Shelter building
- A woodland treasure hunt
Children can explore skill stations such as:
- Rock mining
- Fire skills (age-appropriate and fully supervised)
- Stick shaving and tool exploration
We finish our time together gathered around the fire for s’mores and a small treasure treat. Water and juice are also provided for the group.
Group Size & Support
Our 2.5-hour sessions can accommodate up to 30 preschool or primary-aged children.
We bring in additional staff when needed and may require support from accompanying teachers or parents to meet insurance ratios. This is something we plan together once numbers are confirmed, ensuring a safe and supported experience for everyone.
Inclusion & Accessibility
We have welcomed many groups with children of differing needs and abilities. The woodland space allows for generous movement and accessible participation in activities, even for those who may be a little unsteady on their feet. We simply build in that little bit of extra care and attention where needed.
